Adam's Call: Laura Benanti at 54 Below: Pure Heaven

Laura Benanti and Adam Rothenberg at 54 BelowIf you are looking for something to do this holiday weekend, make sure you go see Laura Benanti at 54 Below in NYC. Her show, In Constant Search of The Right Kind of Attention, is pure heaven! Laura Benanti has it all...a golden voice and spot on comedy that hits perfectly!

This was my first time seeing Laura do one of her cabaret shows and I assure you this will not be my last. She sang a mixture of music from pop to folk to musical theatre. I soaked up every song she sang because Laura's voice is a delight to listen to. She could sing the phone book and I would go see her. 54 Below was a great venue to see her at. It's intimate setting is ideal for any show, but especially Laura who really knows how to connect with the audience. Her personal stories of growing up added much enjoyment to the evening. She is a great story teller. Engaging, funny, and genuine, Laura captured everyone's attention from the moment she opened the show with "I'm Old Fashioned." Not only did this song highlight Laura's sopranic voice, it also displayed her comedy style right off the bat. I knew from that moment, I was in for a real treat.

In addition to singing several cover songs, Laura also sang a few original songs and some selections by her musical director Todd Almond. I adored these original songs and hope Laura continues to write lyrics, because her songs are creative and witty. Todd also wrote some great songs for her vocal style. They make a great team!

Some of my other favorite moments in the show were her mash-up of Ellie Goulding’s "Starry Eyed" and Lana Del Rey’s "Video Games," Joni Mitchell's "Conversation," Harry Chapin's "Mr. Tanner," "Unusual Way," and Laura's "Inappropriate Medley"...songs from her heart which included "Single Ladies," "River Deep, Mountain High," "I Got You Babe," and "The Thong Song."

Laura looked so happy up on stage and I could tell how much she enjoyed performing this show! What makes Laura's show stand-out is her versaitlity in music style, her amazing vocals, her humor, and her genuine warmth. I can't recommend this show enough!

With only 3 shows left (this Friday, May 24 at 8:30pm and this Saturday, May 25 at 8:30pm and 11pm), get your tickets to Laura Benanti In Constant Search of The Right Kind of Attention. Click here to purchase tickets!

Adam's Call: Spandex the Musical: Heartfelt Campy Fun

There is a new show in town that is going to get you moving...Spandex the Musical. Written by Daniel Levin and and Annie Grunow with direction by Andrea Andresakis, Spandex the Musical is heartfelt campy fun that will inspire you to do better. With it's catchy title song "Spandex," the score of this show is enjoyable.

Mixed with in the exercise routines, camp, and spandex-laced costumes is actually a poignant heartfelt story of two woman who find the strength to better themselves. One finds her self-worth and one pushes through her fears, while both come out on top of their game!

Bringing this story alive is a very talented cast of performers whose voices wowed me everytime they sang. I was particularly moved by the vocals of Jerielle Morwitz, Brian Drummy, Sims Lamason, Zachary Karon, Paige Sommerer, and Brandon Stansell! Additionally, Paige and Brandon's comedic talents got me laughing everytime! They were born to make people laugh!

As much as I enjoyed the show, I do think, if the show has a larger life beyond this initial run, it would be a stronger production with a running time of 90 minutes instead of 2 hours. Still worth your time, I do suggest taking a jog over to 777 Theatre (777 8th Avenue, between 47th & 48th Street), to see Spandex the Musical, which plays through May 26 only, so get your tickets now!
