Julie Halston's Old, New, Borrowed, Blue

On Monday, July 11, 2011, I attended Julie Halston's new one woman comedy show "Old, New, Borrowed, Blue" at Birdland in NYC as part of Jim Caruso's Broadway at Birdland.
Julie Halston is one of the funniest performers in the business! So much of what makes Julie funny is her delivery in addition to the material! Julie knows how to take a topic and bring it to the highest degree of funny, even when she is talking about a serious topic, because let's face it, sometimes you just need to laugh in the face of adversity to get through it and Julie has used her humor to get through some very tough times! Luckily for us, she has found a way to bring this to the stage.
In her new show "Old, New, Borrowed, Blue," Julie covers such topics as losing the Drama Desk Award to Edie Falco, a letter she received about what makes a Broadway show great, parenthood/children via Nancy Reagan, working with her good friend, the legendary Charles Busch, her husband's lung transplant, and my all time favorite Julie bit about anorexia. While anorexia is a serious subject and not one most people would find funny, Julie has found a way to make hilarious while still letting the audience know the serious repercussions that could result from the disease. Julie was anorexic for 3 years in the '90s and she loved it because she was at her thinnest. As Julie says in her act, "There is nothing wrong with anorexia, unless you die from it. Then it's not so good, but if you don't die from it, you're very thin and that is wonderful." Julie ended the evening with a very touching tribute to her good friend who used to be a comedian and did a bit about when people die, do they really want things to go on. She talks about different scenarios where this might not be the case.
Julie Halston is a performer with impeccable comedic timing, stage presence, and most of all a special way of delivering her material. Julie's instrument is herself and she knows how to use it! The best way to experience Julie's talent is to go see her for yourself. So the next time she presents her one woman show, I highly, highly suggest going to see her!
